About Curated Lake | Our Story

More Than Just a Stay. It's Your Escape.

Hello, and welcome! I'm Sarah Lake, the founder and chief explorer behind Curated Lake.

My story with the Lakes began as a child, on rainy family walks followed by hot chocolates in cozy pub corners. As an adult, I kept returning, but I grew frustrated. Finding a place to stay that matched the magic of the landscape itself was hard. The search was flooded with generic options, and it was difficult to tell which places truly had that special charm.

So, I decided to build the guide I wished existed.

We are a small, passionate team who personally visits, assesses, and partners with every hotel you see on this site. We don't just look at photos; we walk the fells, we eat the food, we talk to the owners, and we feel the atmosphere.

Our Promise to You

We're thrilled to be your guide to discovering these incredible hideaways.

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing Your Lake District Hotel Location

Keswick, Windermere, or Ambleside? How to Pick Your Perfect Lake District Base.

Choosing where to stay in the Lake District is just as important as choosing what to stay in. Each area offers a different vibe and access to unique adventures. This guide will break down the personality of each key location to help you decide.

1. Windermere & Bowness-on-Windermere

The Vibe: The bustling hub. The most tourist-friendly area with the most amenities.

Best For: First-time visitors, families, and those who want plenty of shops, restaurants, and attractions close by.

Highlights: Boat tours on Lake Windermere (England's largest lake), The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction, easy access from the M6 motorway.

Considerations: Can be very busy during peak season. Feels less "remote" than other valleys.

Our Hotel Picks for Windermere

2. Ambleside

The Vibe: The walkers' paradise. A lively town with an outdoor enthusiast's heart, nestled at the head of Lake Windermere.

Best For: Serious hikers, active couples, and those who want a vibrant atmosphere with plenty of gear shops and pubs.

Highlights: Access to iconic walks (Fairfield Horseshoe, Loughrigg Fell), stunning scenery at Stock Ghyll Force waterfall.

Considerations: The town centre can be hilly and parking is often limited.

Our Hotel Picks for Ambleside

3. Keswick

The Vibe: The adventure capital. A historic market town with a rugged, independent spirit, located in the north on Derwentwater.

Best For: Families, avid walkers (access to the northern fells), and anyone seeking a mix of culture and outdoors.

Highlights: Fantastic weekly market, the fascinating Pencil Museum, theatre by the lake, easy access to Catbells and Borrowdale.

Considerations: A longer drive if you're coming from the south.

Our Hotel Picks for Keswick

4. Ullswater & Glenridding

The Vibe: The serene escape. Dramatic, majestic landscapes and a sense of peaceful isolation.

Best For: Romantics, photographers, and those seeking a quieter, more luxurious retreat.

Highlights: Riding the iconic Ullswater Steamers, walking the stunning stretch of "Aira Force" waterfall.

Considerations: Fewer amenities and dining options than the central hubs.

Our Hotel Picks for Ullswater

The Verdict

No matter where you choose, you're in for a treat. The Lakes are breathtakingly beautiful everywhere.
